For hundreds of years, before the invention of the printing
press by Johannes Gutenburg around 1440, people got news via word of mouth and
strictly hand written missives. It wasn’t until the printing press was invented
that mass produced news was possible.
Word of mouth was no longer how news was passed, news passed via
newspaper allowing for lower to upper class citizens receive nearly daily
updates. Nothing much changed for nearly 550 years until the invention of the
Internet.
With the
creation of this new technology called the Internet, it allowed for the free
form access and sharing of news, ideals, and a general sharing of knowledge.
Ever since then the use of the Internets accessibility has allowed for an
exponential rise in online news. More recently newspaper sales have been
failing, due to the popularity of online news, and the fact it is generally
free.
Me in
particular, I use Yahoo, Times, New York Times, and CNN for my news coverage.
Very rarely will I sit and watch TV news unless it is for extremely important
recent news. However, using the Internet
for news is the most reliable, easy to access, and jump from one important
article to the next without waiting like watching the TV. Online articles are
easier to understand and follow. For all of these reasons, that is why
newspapers are failing and online media is so successful.
Since you're going all historical, don't forget the old town criers.
